PALSPeers Assisting in Learning Social Skills
Applegarth Elementary School is implementing a peer mentor program to help children who are working on increasing their communication, social, and play skills as well as making and sustaining friendships with their peers. Peer mentors are a great way for students to learn to deal with differences, create empathy for students who have special needs, and increase self-esteem and self-confidence.
The Peers Assisting in Learning Social Skills program (PALS) is an educational program designed to be an opportunity for students to become peer mentors. As mentors, students will be trained on peer sensitivity and acceptance. Mentors will be supervised throughout sessions as they help other children develop and enhance their social skills and friendships through the use of social skills education, fun games, and activities.
Unified Program
UNIFIED is a term used to describe an inclusive setting that provides all students an equal opportunity to engage in the physical, social, and mental aspects of the course. P.A.L.S. is an acronym for Peer Assisted Leadership Skills. In this program, Unified students and P.A. L. S. work alongside each other to develop stronger physical skill sets, social skills, and friendships through games and activities within a Physical Education Setting.
