Title I Program Description

The purpose of Title I, Part A is to provide all children significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education, and to close educational achievement gaps. Title I, Part A (Title I) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) provides financial assistance to local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging, State academic standards.

Funding for Title I begins with the award of allocations by state per the United States Department of Education. The New Jersey Department of Education provides the Monroe Township School District its Title I allocation based on the number of low-income students attending Title I schools. 

Program Requirements

The Monroe Township School District operates a targeted assistance Title I program. Schools receiving Title I funds are known as targeted assistance schools. Such schools may use Title I funds only for services to children identified as having the greatest need of assistance. Students do not need to be from low-income households to qualify for Title I services. The following schools have been identified for Title I services: Monroe Township High School (9-12), Brookside Elementary School (3-5), Mill Lake Elementary School (K-3) and Woodland Elementary School (4-5). 

Title I funds will be used only as designated in the Title I guidelines and regulations and provide identified students with extra educational assistance beyond the regular classroom.  The Title I program is designed to support students that have been identified as needing additional assistance in Language Arts Literacy and Mathematics. 

Title I schools will: 

• Identify students who are in need of the most educational assistance based on the criteria the district/school has chosen. 
• Set goals for improving the skills of students who are academically at-risk. 
• Provide each student with a personalized educational improvement plan. 
• Measure the progress of each student to determine the effectiveness of the Title I Program. 
• Develop programs, plans, and activities for students and parents that support regular classroom instruction and family and community engagement.
