• Welcome to 3rd Grade!

    Communication
I believe in collaboration and open communication between teachers and parents. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any concern regarding your child, an assignment, etc.  I will do the same in touching base with you frequently if there is any issue pertaining to behavior, homework, or simply because your child is doing an outstanding job! You can expect monthly news letters specific to my class as well. Written notes, emails, phone calls, scheduled conferences, progress reports, and report cards are all great methods of communication.

My classroom is peanut/ tree nut-free this year. With that being said, when we have snack in the morning in the classroom, snacks must be peanut-free and I need to see the store label. Our lunch is at 1:08pm, so please remember to send your child to school with a HEALTHY snack to keep their brains working till then! In addition, if you plan on sending in anything for your child’s birthday, please contactme first so we can discuss the ingredients. (Dunkin Donuts is no longer peanut-free.) Healthy treats or non-food items (an eraser, bookmark) are best. If your child IS allergic to peanuts/ tree nuts, I will be contacting you about possible alternative treats.

Side note: I allow my students to have a water bottle at their desks.

    Folders

As you have already seen, I gave your child a Homework Folder. This will go home and be returned each day. I will not be requiring you to sign their homework agenda books or the folders, unless an issue arises.  Soon you will see your child’s Friday Folder, which will go home each week containing completed and graded work. You will have to sign this folder and return it empty the following Monday so I know you looked through the papers and reviewed them with your little one. (Thank you for promptly returning all the important notices and forms sent home with your child the first day of school already!!)

    School Attendance/Changes in Transportation

Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is very important to his/her success.  I can’t stress the importance of attendance enough!  In the event that your child is absent, please send a note the following day giving the reason for their absence with your signature.  In order to mark the absence as excused, the office must have a note.

If you need to pick up your child early, you must sign them out in the office.  They will then call your child to the office.  If there is a change in your child's transportation home please call the office and send in a note to notify me.  The office will then have record of the change and I will also be aware of it.  Bus changes must be made through official forms.  A child will not be permitted to get on a different bus without this form.  Do not rely on your child to tell me information concerning transportation changes.  This includes older siblings.  Children often become confused and relay messages incorrectly.  If no written note is sent in or the office does not receive a phone call from you, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation.

    Classroom Management

My classroom is structured around the students. We will be discussing and practicing the important rules and procedures of the room that when followed and applied, will ensure a safe, friendly, and cooperative year.  I, as the teacher, will model appropriate behavior and will structure my lessons so that misbehavior doesn’t occur in the first place.  I also believe in positive reinforcement, so your child has many fun opportunities to work hard towards.

Our class Learning Goals and Expectations:

                1.) We will learn together

2.) We will recognize that we are all unique individuals and respect our differences.

3.) We will be positive and polite.

    Classroom Rules:

                * Currently being drafted by the students!

    Behavior:
I will be using the ‘How Am I Doing Today?’
method which entails different color cards for each student.

    GREEN: Great behavior!

YELLOW: Warning! A yellow card will be placed on the student’s desk and/or flipped on the chart if the activity is out of seats.

ORANGE: Conference with teacher. The student will have to stay inside for ½ of recess to talk with the teacher about what the issue was, why it happened (repeatedly), and what the child is going to do to make better judgments/decisions next time so this doesn’t happen again. A Behavior Reflection sheet will be filled out and this will go home to be signed by you and returned.

RED: Call home. If the warnings, the conference, and the note home do not correct the behavior, I will call home to discuss with you what actions are going to take place to correct the issue.

Any severe disruptions will be sent directly to the Principal or Vice Principal.

Although the Friday Folders and Homework Folders may contain notes, newsletters, or updates from me, they will not contain a specific behavior report unless a circumstance arises where this would be necessary for any specific child.

     Homework

Homework is your child’s responsibility as a student. The homework I assign will be authentic, will have a purpose, and its completion will ensure a beneficial follow-up to lessons taught during school.

I will check homework everyday but misses will be counted on a weekly basis:

1 miss= verbal warning, child may hand it in the following day.

2 misses= shortened recess, they will finish the assignment during this time.

3 misses= no recess for a day, a note will be sent home for you to sign and return. (While child is in for recess, they will finish the work, conference with me about the issue, and will sign the note as well.)

*The students will be able to look and see their progress throughout the week by the “Fishing for Good Grades” system.  Each child has 3 fish on a bulletin board, as each “takes a dive toward the deep end” they know they missed a homework!

    Book Orders

Your child will be bringing home a Scholastic order form to order books about once a month.  If you wish to order, simply fill out the form and send a check made out to Scholastic Book Clubs in an envelope.  Please be sure not to send any cash for Scholastic Book orders.  These orders are provided as a convenient way for you to order quality books for your child at a low price.  It is very important for your child to be read to at home every day.  Having a library of books at home helps to enrich their reading development at a quicker pace.

As an added bonus, for every dollar that is spent on books through these orders, our class earns bonus points that can be used for free books and other instructional materials for our classroom.  This is a win-win situation because you get quality books for your home and you are also helping to provide quality literature for the classroom.  Please remember that you are never under any obligation to order.
