Falcon's Nest PreschoolMonroe Township High School
The Falcon’s Nest Preschool is the Child Development Laboratory class of the Monroe Township High School Working With Children program. For two hours a day, four days a week, Monday through Thursday, children from the community attend a preschool class taught by the High School students. The morning class operates from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. and the afternoon class operates from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. The program begins at the end of October or the beginning of November and runs through the end of May. The students follow a developmentally appropriate curriculum and there is always a certified staff member and paraprofessional in the room. The curriculum covers numbers, letters, shapes, colors and holidays. We focus on developing independence, increasing social skills and building self-concept and the joy of learning.
The classroom is completely outfitted with small motor manipulative materials and gross motor toys. Many art and fine motor projects are planned. There is a bathroom in the classroom, which is sized especially for the children. There is an outdoor play area enclosed in the center of the school. The High School students have ipads which can be used for educational resources. Monroe Township High School is a secure facility and there are two full-time nurses on staff. All children must be immunized before starting school.
Our day begins with a circle time to familiarize children with the topics and letters of the week. Typically we then break up into “work time” when individual children work one-to-one with a high school student. We then have free play followed by snack which are provided in school. Care is taken to provide snacks that are peanut and tree nut free. We make certain to be familiar with all food allergies and restrictions. After snack, we have a story time, with sharing, and arts and crafts, game time, and group letter time. We complete our day with a “recall” and summation of the topics of the week. Children are released and sent home only to their parents or authorized adult.
Children from Monroe Township and Jamesburg are accepted in chronological order, with preference to the older children. Children must be 3 ½ and fully potty trained in order to start. No pull-ups are allowed. We accept a maximum of forty-eight children each year (24 for each class). The children are paired with high school students, who plan their activities and track their progress. Parents are notified of class time and acceptance before June 30th for the following school year.
